Malice
Malice is the purple corruption inside the Divine Beasts, Hyrule Castle, and a few cursed spots such as Naydra's spring. A pool eats hearts if you touch it. A mouth keeps spitting cursed skulls. An orange eye is the piece you can actually destroy.
Eyes first, then the path
Find the glowing eye stuck in the sludge or on a nearby wall. Any arrow breaks it. When the eye dies, the connected pool and the mouth calm down, and a bridge or a terminal that was buried becomes usable. Shooting the pool itself does nothing. Walking through it to 'save an arrow' spends hearts faster than the arrow was worth.
Some eyes are around a corner or above a mouth, so the mouth looks like the target. It is not. Clear the skulls it has already spit if they are in your face, then look up and along the walls before you spend bomb arrows on the sludge. Cryonis and Magnesis do not scrub Malice off a floor.
Where you will keep seeing it
Every Divine Beast uses Malice as a lock on the map. If a ramp is coated, there is an eye for that ramp. Hyrule Castle uses the same rule on stairs and gates. Mark the eye, not the puddle, when you are learning a beast's layout.
Naydra is the outdoor version. The dragon is wrapped in Malice eyes. Shoot those eyes to free it. After that, the pools on the mountain go quiet. That fight is a shooting gallery, not a boss health bar, and it is described with the three dragons.
